Sun Valley History...

...America's first Ski Resort.

The Sun Valley Resort entrance is marked by this distinctive red barn

Sun Valley was conceived by W. Averell Harriman, of the Union Pacific Railroad before he became New York's governor. Harriman sought to build passenger traffic to the West, and his love of skiing craved an American version of the Swiss and Austrian Alps. He commissioned Felix Schaffgotsch to find the perfect site, and Ketchum was "discovered" in 1936. Within 7 months at a cost of $1.5 million, the initial four-story lodge was constructed on the former Brass Ranch lands, and ski runs were created on Dollar and Proctor Mountains.

Public relations whiz Steve Hannagan, named the lodge and its facilities Sun Valley, and made opening night a gala event, attended by movie stars such as Errol Flynn and Clarke Gable, whose autographed black-and-white photos adorn the walls of the lodge today. By the second winter, the chalet-style Sun Valley Inn was completed. Gary Cooper, Ingrid Bergman and others came to play at the elegant, new winter resort.

Harriman decided his customers should be borne up the mountain in greater comfort and style than the usual towrope... the chair lift was born!
