Sawtooth National Forest...

... a Forest For All Seasons.

Early settlers knew that the welfare of their community depended on a plentiful supply of timber and that a forest cover is the most effective means of regulating a stream flow for irrigation, protection and feed for wild game, birds, fish, and other useful purposes.

In addition, the Ketchum and surrounding area livestock industry depended upon the conservative use of the range.

Bordering Ketchum and Sun Valley on one side, The Sawtooth National Forest was created on May 29, 1905, by proclamation of President Theodore Roosevelt.

It was then called "Sawtooth Forest Reserve" and contained 1,947,520 acres of timber, lakes, streams, and mountain meadows.

Located in central Idaho, the Sawtooth National Forest encompasses 2.1 million acres and is a "Forest For All Seasons".

Nearby lies the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Sawtooth Wilderness. Within the boundaries of the 754,000 acre Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) are approximately 750 miles of trails, 40 peaks rising over 10,000 feet and 300 plus high mountain lakes that add to the spectacular scenery and vistas.
